About the KPMG Graduate Trainee application, someone reached out to me and stated 3 reasons why he felt he wasn’t qualified:1. He’s not an Accountant2. Studied Philosophy and doesn’t sound like a relevant discipline3. In his words, “these Quantitative tests, count me out”.Here was my response to him:On the first and second point, you don’t have to be an Accountant to be eligible to apply. KPMG Nigeria has three broad divisions- Tax, Audit, and Advisory. All you need to do is to check the website to familiarize yourself with the services we provide. On Quantitative tests. You need to understand the fact that even though Maths comes easy for some, you can learn whatever you put your mind into.Nobody learnt GRE or GMAT from the womb. All you need is to prepare with the right materials mastering the strategies and this comes with consistent practice.Don’t write yourself off. Give it a try.Wish you the best.

ICAP's recent initiative to offer international articleship opportunities for students has sparked discussions on its overall benefits. While there are clear advantages such as gaining global exposure, enhancing professional skills, and expanding professional networks, there are also potential challenges to consider.Financial implications, including the cost of living abroad and visa requirements, can be significant barriers for some students. Additionally, adapting to a new work environment and cultural norms may pose initial challenges. However, for students who are willing to overcome these obstacles, international articleship with ICAP offers a unique chance to immerse oneself in diverse business practices, learn from global experts, and build a solid foundation for a successful career in the competitive field of chartered accountancy.Ultimately, the decision to pursue international articleship depends on individual readiness to embrace both the opportunities and challenges it presents.

Alhamdullilah I am thrilled to announce that I have received an offer from Grant Thornton UK LLP for their 12-month Audit placement program! 🎉Reflecting on this journey, I can't help but feel immense gratitude for the experiences and challenges that have shaped me. Hence, I’d like to share some of my valuable tips I have learnt over this period:TIP 1: PLAN 📋Planning is crucial! Set clear goals and strategies to achieve them. Manage your time, set realistic expectations, and know your resources.Finding a placement is intense. For me, a solid plan helped balance my studies, part-time job, and social life while still dedicating time to the search.TIP 2: FOCUS 🎯Develop discipline and endurance. The placement search can get monotonous, so stick to your plan and stay focused.Remember, competition is fierce! Don't get distracted even if you have a year to find a placement. Similar to my own situation, an unconventional degree and immigrant status are added challenges. Most importantly time is limited—no second chances!TIP 3: NETWORK🤝You'll hear this a lot: networking is key. The right connections can transform your career path.A huge thanks to Unaludo Thando Mafa, Mahesh Perumalla and Armando Bogdanov for their support and advice. You were crucial in helping me secure my placement!TIP 4: PERSEVERE💪You need to understand that the initial motivation in finding a placement will slowly subside especially if rejections from companies start piling up. I faced over 150+ rejections before I got my first yes. It is not easy! It is demoralising and frustrating. At some point, like myself, you might even want to give up. However, the most important thing to remember is that you’re only one yes away! TIP 5: REFLECT🔍Missed opportunities? Time to tweak your approach!Review successful CVs and cover letters, and apply what you learn. Schedule meetings with the University of Exeter Career Zone to improve your interview and assessment skills to better match employer needs.TIP 6: ENQUIRE ❓Always ask about placement opportunities to understand the company, role, and requirements. After rejections, seek feedback to improve.Every rejection I faced was followed by a call for feedback. Each acceptance led to questions for my network to gain deeper insights. It's better to ask than to stay clueless!TIP 7🌴You're not a machine! Take breaks and keep track of your social life, mental, and physical health. This boosts your productivity early on and enhances your effectiveness in later hiring stages.TIP 8: FAITH🙏🏻This is the most important tip out of all of them. Have faith in yourself and the Almighty that you will be successful! I am a firm believer that good things happen to hardworking people. You need to believe in yourself. Self-confidence and self-assurance is key.I'm excited to embark on this new chapter with Grant Thornton, where I hope to deepen my knowledge, gain practical experience, and contribute to a dynamic team. InShaAllah!

ACCA Hong Kong recently organised a roundtable discussion on the profession's attractiveness, bringing together esteemed leaders from the accountancy sector to explore industry trends and examine talent strategies to enhance the profession's appeal to the younger generation. The roundtable participants reached a consensus that early engagement with secondary and university students is essential. They emphasised the importance of sparking students' interest before they make career decisions and suggested offering internship programmes to allow students to witness the value of the profession firsthand. Additionally, they proposed considering flexible work arrangements to attract young professionals. We express our gratitude to all the roundtable participants for their valuable contribution. They are: Hon Edmund Wong, FCCA, Legislative Council Member (#Accountancy); Clement Chan of Hong Kong Association of Registered Public Interest Entity Auditors Limited (#PIEAA); Stephen Law of Hong Kong Business Accountants Association (HKBAA); Roy Leung of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA); Margaret Mak of the Associations of Woman Accountants Hong Kong (#AWAHK); Lie Ming Or FCA of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (#CAANZ); Parco Wu of The Society of Chinese Accountants & Auditor (#SCAA); together with ACCA's Joseph Owolabi, FCCA, PMIIA, MAICD, Danny Po and Alice Yip.
