What was the Tocks Island Dam project? ›

The proposed Tocks Island Dam would have created a lake-sized reservoir roughly 40 miles long and a mile wide. Before building it, some 600 families and property owners whose land would be inundated had to be displaced. Some of these families had lived on and worked the land for centuries.

The deepest point on the Delaware River is located at Narrowsburg in the Town of Tusten, where the Big Eddy runs 113 feet deep. Normal riffle areas are 2-8 feet in depth and pools range from 12-20 feet deep.

Kayakers paddle the river between the park's low mountains, while hikers trek alongside and peer down into the 1,000-foot-deep Water Gap.

River current is approximately 2 mph. Waves between 4 to 5 feet and swift river currents at least 2.5 mph.

Swimming in areas of the river outside the life guarded beaches is permitted, but not recommended. Strong currents, sharp drop-offs, and constantly changing river conditions make many areas unsafe for swimming.
